The post-Norman development of FulfordLocation of the Anglo-Saxon settlement of Gate Fulford
The landscape suggests that the earlier settlement of Gate Fulford was abandoned after the Norman Conquest. The pattern that emerges from the 1651 map reveals a classic post-Norman settlement. There is some conjecture that the Roman route south ran along the line at the rear, to the south-west of the new village. If this interpretation is correct, there were no buildings to impede the warriors during the battle. |
